Scam Prevention
Posted On: 10/27/2021
Over the past few years phone and internet scams have increased worldwide. Scammers pretend to be from organizations you know, tell you there is a problem or prize and pressure you to act immediately. No legitimate organization will ask for gift cards as payment and if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. The best practice is to never give out personal information to someone who calls you and get the callers information, hang up and then call the organization back directly (via their public phone number) to confirm. IMPERSONATOR SCAM If someone calls claiming to be from IRS, Social Security Office or Law Enforcement demanding payment HANG UP. The government and law enforcement will NEVER demand payment over the phone. PHISHING SCAM If you receive a text or email with a link to confirm your account, get information on late package, or claim a refund, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK. Delete the message and if you are concerned about your account status, call the company directly to follow up. VENMO SCAM If you receive money from a stranger by “accident” and they request you send it back, DO NOT TRANSFER THE MONEY. Let the payment sit. Venmo can reverse the transaction.
REMEMBER if you receive a call from someone demanding payment, you should:
-Never give personal or financial information over the phone.
-Ask for contact information from the caller and end the conversation.
-Legitimate organizations DO NOT ASK FOR GIFT CARDS as payment.
